Best Friend From School (For a While, Anyway)...
• People
This time I want to describe somebody I met in high school. I am about 14 or so now, new school, new friends… There is one guy who turns out to be my best friend (for a while, at least). We get on really well and although I didn’t register at the time, he was a somewhat femme gay guy.
During an early French lesson (French being a new subject to us), we are taught that all objects in French have a gender. So a book may be female and a lamp-post male (or whatever). Suddenly my friend is delightedly making phrases such as “She screwed him up and put him in the bin” and the like, where ‘She’ was always destroying ‘him’. He was also grinning like a maniac.
What was obvious here was that he found the objectification of a man by a woman interesting long before it even registered with me. There were many other examples of his thoughts, for example, in an English assignment, we were brainstorming about characters and he said almost exactly: “He could confide in her and in the end she should just crush him” - “he” in this case being a particularly fragile character in our story.
He never once made any allusions to BDSM but a lot of the time he seemed to have the ‘female crushing’ fetish. He had dreams of being a film director and said he wanted to make a film which started with a close-up of some girl’s shoes as she walked. (Hardly original there!).
Anyway, you would have thought us two would get along like a house on fire, but sadly it didn’t last long. Finally, I was alone with him since I had gone with him to visit his gran, and he began verbally abusing me and kicking me out of the blue, talking down to me with corny lines such as “I’m going to crush you like an ant”. I was totally WTF but the violence was a little disturbing. He whined like a brat when I hit him back ten times harder.
I tried to sustain the friendship but all my respect for him vanished quickly. I found he was a liar, had no honour, and was generally a complete moron. If he was in a group of people, he would tell them all to laugh really loudly as they walked past other people, to make it seem like he was fun to be around.
The word loser springs to mind, but I wanted to share this with you all because it’s weird how similar we were in some respects.
