Music in BDSM

Sensual Pleasures

As a musician, I find sound and the properties it can have very sensual. My tastes favour electronic music because of the limitless control the author has to create sounds on a whim, though I also like accoustic music and am growing to explore it more.

For domination though, the hard and alien IDM of Squarepusher and Aphex Twin are funky and nasty enough to compliment and augment my mood. A lot of these tunes are energetic and abrasive, often with dark or fantasy overtones. I have heard Richard James’ Windowlicker mentioned on boards by more than two Dommes as being in perfect mood, with a funky but edgy club beat and mangled, erotic moaning filtered into one hell of a melody.

Sometimes I find myself almost dancing in a way to the music, though not in the conventional sense, since I am part of Richard, doing things, often naughty things, and feeding back off of the phsyical sensations, the smoothness of skin, the material of the clothes I’m wearing, the pain and pleasure in varying intensities, moulding my slave in my response to the rhythms, textures and melodies that I’m experiencing.

Getting into more abrasive (and even less known) territoriy, there are Venetian Snares which even I can find torturous at times with peircing, irregular drum patterns and lots of noise and distortion. The Noisecore thing is also useful because Richard can find the machine-gun style drumming harsh on the ears even at low (i.e. safe) volumes.

Another strategy with music is to use ‘background music’, such as more repetetive ‘dance’ music. Conventional acid, electro and the like are good and work well for both of us, and are suited to ‘midddle of the road’ scenes where I’m not shooting for intensity.

In the Aftercare phase, romantic and soothing music is obviously the thing we both want to hear. That could be anything from 80’s synthpop (which has a lot of sentimental value to me) to ambient, or even gasp something Richard wants to listen to. Heheh ;)

Comments

if You want great pulsating hypnotic music: Iron Butterfly “In-a-gadda-da-vida” … the newly remastered cd issue has the original, the radio version, and a live version … it slowly overpowers Your senses and becomes a throbbing “presence” choreographing “the dance” (whatever THAT may be at the time).

We’ve certainly had some good times with the aid of Squarepusher.

I think for me electro and most anything with deep bass that is also strongly rhythmic worked well for me. Hard to say since it was more a context, conscious listening on my part would’ve disrupted things.

And some Pet Shop Boys or Sarah Vaughan can be quite lovely for cuddling.

I found that Mike Oldfield has produced a very very BDSM song when creating SHADOWS ON THE WALL.
